Shane Wood and I are excited to share our call for proposals for a special issue on raciolinguistic justice and writing assessment in the Journal of Writing Assessment. The issue will build off of our recently published WAC book, On Response: Raciolinguistic Justice and Responding to Student Writing.
Raciolinguistic justice is a framework for "deep and ongoing contemplation" that interrogates how race and language are constructed together and mobilized to reproduce inequity within and beyond educational contexts (Alim). Raciolinguistically-just approaches embrace language difference as an asset, empower students’ voices and identities, resist standard language ideologies, and extend justice-oriented pedagogies.
Much of what I learned about raciolinguistic justice came from my years of experience teaching at a community college, and we are particularly hopeful to include voices from two-year colleges and other access-oriented institutions where teacher-scholars engage daily in this work on a practical level.
Please consider submitting a proposal or sharing with your colleagues.
Submission & Timeline: Please submit a 300-400 word proposal to Shane A. Wood (shane.wood) and Emily K. Suh (emily.suh) by November 1, 2026. Please ensure you align with JWA policies throughout the writing process. Any human-subjects research must conform with IRB approval and submit documentation as requested by JWA.
