Greetings from (the formerly titled) CCCC Wikipedia Initiative,
Despite the de-charterting by NCTE, the CCCC Wikipedia Initiative is committed to continuing our work, although under a new name. “Wikiproject Writing” is the Initiative’s presence on Wikipedia, and we plan to operate under that name for the near future. If and when an organization arises to replace CCCC, we will explore the possibility of partnering with that organization and/or with another currently existing organization that represents the interests of writing studies.
With that said, we are excited to invite you to our fall 2026 editing event, Representing Writing Studies Books on Wikipedia. This hands-on Wikipedia editing session will focus on improving existing articles and creating new ones about important scholarly books in rhetoric, composition, and writing studies, broadly defined.

Representing Writing Studies Books on Wikipedia
Scholarly books such as monographs, edited collections, textbooks, and reference books have played an important role in shaping the intellectual history of writing studies, yet many of our most celebrated and cited works have limited or no representation on Wikipedia. James Berlin’s Rhetoric and Reality? No Wikipedia article. Smitherman’s Talkin and Testifyin? No Wikipedia article. Elbow’s Writing Without Teachers? No Wikipedia article. You get the point. This event offers an opportunity to help address that gap by contributing reliable, well-sourced information about the scholarship that has shaped our disciplines.
What to Expect
Participants will work together to create new Wikipedia articles and expand existing ones. We will focus particularly on scholarly books that have made significant contributions and that have significant coverage in secondary sources as a result. This second part is especially important in Wikipedia.
The event will begin with a brief introduction to Wikipedia editing and some strategies for representing scholarly books and disciplinary scholarship on Wikipedia. We will then move into a collaborative editing session, where participants can work on their own articles or join others who are developing related pages. No previous Wikipedia editing experience is required, but it would be helpful to at least register for an account if you don’t already have one.
This event is also an opportunity to think about what it means for scholarship to become part of the public knowledge commons. Wikipedia is often one of the first places readers encounter information about a scholarly topic, author, or book. By documenting our field’s intellectual history and making its scholarship more visible and accessible, we can help ensure that the knowledge produced in rhetoric, composition, and writing studies is represented in the places where people are already looking for information.
If you would like to participate, consider identifying a scholarly book in rhetoric, composition, writing studies, or a related field that you think deserves greater representation on Wikipedia. You may bring an existing Wikipedia article that you would like to improve, or an idea for a new article. Reach out to Matt (mvetter) or Jennifer (jkjohnson) with your suggestions/ideas.
We particularly encourage participants to bring secondary sources that discuss the book or its significance. Wikipedia articles are built from published, reliable sources, so reviews, scholarly articles, book chapters, reference works, and other independent sources can provide a useful starting point.
No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary to attend. We will provide guidance throughout the event.

One of the most visited websites in the world, Wikipedia has emerged within living memory as a key knowledge-broker and perception-shaper for readers and writers worldwide. Writing expert knowledge into Wikipedia is one important way we can address knowledge gaps, imbalances, and misinformation online. Established in 2019 as the CCCC Wikipedia Initiative, Wikiproject Writing proceeds from the conviction that it matters to edit Wikipedia, especially for academics committed to knowledge equity as a fundamental groundwork for social justice. Wikiproject Writing is working to develop skills, cultivate inclusive community, and build structures of support and recognition for past, present, and future members of the field who recognize the importance of engaging with Wikipedia as a form of global public humanities scholarship.
