Tutors!

We are excited to share the application for the Tutor Talks Executive Committee with you. As an Executive Committee member, you will co-develop and co-facilitate a series of virtual writing center discussions with folks from other writing centers (who are equally nerdy about the work we do) around the world.

This is a great professional/personal opportunity to build upon your writing center repertoires. Not only will you meet fellow tutors from writing centers across the country and beyond and learn from their experiences, but serving on the Executive Committee will look great on your resume/CV and help you develop your leadership skills.

Here are some testimonials from the current Executive Committee members, Basil and Rasha, as well the Tutor Talks Rep on the SCWCA Board, Alanna:

Basil: As an undergraduate tutor at the University of Houston, serving on the TTEC taught me a lot about leadership. At first I was nervous that I wouldn’t be knowledgeable enough to be an effective Committee member, but I became a lot more confident and comfortable with taking the lead on facilitating discussions. It’s not about knowing everything, it’s about creating an environment where everyone can learn from each other. I will definitely take these lessons with me into my career.

Rasha: By serving as an Executive Committee Member with Tutor Talks, I was able to refine my craft as a Writing Fellow in the Graduate School Writing Center at the University of Maryland, College Park. So many of our discussions with other writing center folks made their way into my tutoring sessions with students. I found myself drawing from the literacy praxis of other folks and applying strategies/practices that made me a more critical, mindful, and intentional tutor.

Alanna: For a bit of context,Tutor Talks emerged from an SCWCA micro-regional event a few year ago, with a goal in mind of creating more spaces and places for tutors to connect. SCWCA is an affiliate of the IWCA.Tutors who are selected to be part of the Executive Committee have the opportunity to interact with key organizations in the writing center field while also actively and meaningfully contributing to professional development for tutors. The Executive Committee’s work to make professional development more accessible to tutors everywhere is vital.I am consistently impressed by the creativity and enthusiasm of this Committee and very much enjoy serving as their liaison on the SCWCA Board.

The deadline to apply for the Tutor Talks 2024-2025 Executive Committee is July 1st! Apply here: application form.
