New: Center Moves!!

Hi everyone, The Center Moves Editors are thrilled to inform you that our guest edited special issue, Training Tutors to Work with Graduate and Post-doctoral Writersis live! These lessons are directly related to ongoing conversations about the need for more writing center support for graduate students and post-docs.

Jennifer Marciniak and Rebecca Bruning, our guest editors, bring you this 6th issue that offers practical resources for training tutors to support graduate writers’ with their long-term research projects (including theses, dissertations, and publications), job-market materials, and lower-order concerns in high-stakes writing. You’ll find the following in this issue:

• Maren Nield presents an adaptable asynchronous module designed to introduce writers to the ways graduate writing genre conventions differ from those of undergraduate writers.
• Salena Anderson, Grace Brannen, Amy Crutchfield, and Grace Morrison offer a scaffolded active reading and rhetorical analysis activity that promotes deeper understanding of disciplinary conventions for writers and aids tutors’ ability to provide more informed writing feedback.
• Tyler Gardner, C. Chanel Earl, Mary Hedengren, Jacquelyn Christensen, Larisa R. Schumann, and Cristie Cowles Charles provide a roadmap for a first session with a graduate writer working on their thesis/dissertation specifically centered on providing guidance on shifting into this independent work after years of structure coursework.
• Mary Helen Truglia and Leslie E. Drane remind us that graduate students are not only writing research papers — writing a teaching philosophy can also be a challenge! So, they offer a training model that helps tutors clarify the genre and increase writers’ confidence.
