A quick note about the position for this list: although it has a rhetoric/composition dimension, this is not a conventional rhet/comp search. It is a deliberately “joint” hire involving our Film Studies program, and that interdisciplinary connection is an important part of what we’re looking for.
If someone in your orbit works at the intersection of these areas, or has a profile that could make this combination especially generative, I’d be grateful if you’d pass the ad along.
The Department of English at the College of Charleston is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English with an emphasis in film and digital media production to begin on August 16, 2027. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. or terminal degree in English, Film Studies, Composition & Rhetoric, or a related field; a promising, emerging record in research and media production; and the potential to provide meaningful service to the department, campus, and the broader Charleston community.
The English department offers a B.A. in English with three concentrations—Creative Writing, Literature & Film, and Writing, Rhetoric, & Publication—as well as an MFA in Creative Writing and a B.A. track for future secondary English teachers. We also lead a thriving Film Studies minor. The standard teaching assignment is 9 credits (typically three courses per semester), and teaching duties cover all levels, including First-Year Writing courses, introductory and upper-level courses, and graduate courses that support the MFA program.
Specific teaching assignments will include Film Studies courses such as “Film and Media Arts Production” and “Special Topics in Film,” as well as Writing, Rhetoric, & Publication courses such as “Writing for the Web” and “Rhetoric in a Digital Age.” Faculty are encouraged to develop new courses aligned both with their research interests and program needs; to collaborate with Film Studies and Writing, Rhetoric, & Publication faculty in ongoing curricular and interdisciplinary expansion; to participate in the periodic teaching of first-year writing, first-year experience courses, and Honors College colloquia; and to mentor undergraduate independent studies and Bachelor’s Essays.
Founded in 1770 and located in the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina, the College of Charleston is a public institution of 11,000 students with a commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Charleston is a thriving city with abundant culture. Our interdisciplinary Film Studies program partners with local events, including the College’s annual Student Film Festival, the Charleston Film Festival, and the Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival. Undergraduates in Film Studies and Writing, Rhetoric, & Publication programs intern as videographers, content developers, editors, script writers, and marketing assistants at a variety of local and national organizations.
Applicants should submit: (1) a cover letter; (2) a statement of teaching philosophy; (3) CV; and (4) unofficial graduate transcripts by December 1 to https://jobs.cofc.edu/postings/18653
Contact Department Chair Dr. Anton Vander Zee (vanderzeeal) with questions about applying. Additional materials, including letters of reference, will be requested after the initial review, and preliminary interviews will be conducted by Zoom.
All best,
Jacob
