My name is Suzanne Labadie, and I am reaching out from Oakland Community College in Southeast Michigan to share news about a summer professional development initiative that I am co-facilitating with Brett Griffiths from Schoolcraft College and Anne Gere from University of Michigan.
We are excited to announce that the application cycle is now open for the 2026 MLA Institute on Reading and Writing Pedagogy taking place this summer at the University of Michigan from May 31-June 5th.
The Institute I and my colleagues are hosting is an opportunity exclusively for graduate students and early career faculty in the Midwest. The MLA Institutes on Reading and Writing Pedagogy, supported by the Mellon Foundation, offer targeted training to graduate students and early career instructors, focusing on the theory and practice of teaching at access-oriented institutions (AOIs)—community colleges and other colleges that prioritize access over selectivity in admissions. Because many students begin their college careers at AOIs and later transfer to selective institutions, the pedagogy that benefits this population of learners also enhances literacy at all institutions.
We encourage graduate students in English and related fields as well as part-time and full-time instructors at AOIs to apply, and we hope that you can help us share our Institute with anyone in your network who could benefit.
