Brandon Fralix and I want to update you on where things stand with The National Census of Writing. We last collected data in 2023. Thank you to those who participated. The move of the actual site to UC-San Diego has come with its challenges as we learned that the NCW would require new software to support both the front and back end of the posting of the data, which required us to completely overhaul how the data is processed and presented. These challenges came with a need to find additional resources, both financial and human.
The good news is that we have worked our way through the labyrinth of systems. Unless we have another challenge thrown our way, we plan to have the 2023 data alongside the 2013 and 2017 available to you by the end of the Fall semester. Our hope is to publish it much sooner, but we’ve learned from experience that these things take much longer than expected. Thank you for your on-going patience.
As we have navigated the different challenges and need for additional resources, we have been asked to explain the impact of the NCW on the work of the field. We have been able to locate citations through Google Scholar and other search engines, but up to this point we have been unable to document except anecdotally how people use the NCW in their teaching, professional activity, service, and administrative responsibilities.
To help us with this effort, if you have used the NCW as part of your work or just want to share a testimonial, please take a few minutes to complete this form. Your responses will help us tell the story of the NCW and its impact on the field.
We’ll reach back out once we publish the updated website and data.
Thanks and be well,
